Inside the Thread

Charlotte Sweet

Charlotte Sweet, the founder of Sewn Right, invited us to her studio to see behind the scenes of her amazing new tailoring business in West London. We interviewed Charlotte to hear all about how she became a seamstress and where the inspiration came from to start her own business.

What does Sewn Right do?

We specialise in high quality alterations and repairs. With an online booking service, you can book yourself into our diary for a fitting that suits you, then we collect and deliver for free! We also offer fashion sewing services to fashion designers, stores as well as a bridal service to private and trade clients.

Where did the name Sewn Right come from?

Sewn Right came from me wanting to make sure your clothes fit right, and naturally the name fitted!

What made you want to start your own business?

I’ve always envisaged myself as being my own boss one day. I believe that alteration services have become old fashioned in London – either too stuffy or too amateur for people to trust – so came up with the idea of offering a modern alternative. One of my main aims is to help stop the growing trend of fast, disposable fashion. I hope people will take another look at what they can have altered in their wardrobe instead of throwing it away. I’ve been lucky enough to work at some of the biggest fashion retailers, like Selfridges and Net-a-Porter, but I want to make sewing accessible to everyone!

Summer or Winter?

Winter clothes – but summer nights, BBQ’s and cocktails !

For someone starting out in the tailoring/seamstress world, what advice do you have?

Learn and get as much work experience as you can! No matter how old you are, you can learn more so don’t be afraid to ask questions. If you manage to get an internship, tell them you want to sew. It’ll be far better than doing the coffee rounds!

The biggest misconception about the tailoring industry?

That all seamstresses and tailors are old – there are really cool people in the industry.

Ideal Friday night out?

Have a nice dinner and cocktails – Sketch in London is my favourite treat.

Describe your style in three words?

Oversized, girly and pastel.

If you could be anyone for the day, who would you be?

Sarah Jessica Parker – she’s my favourite.

You can go back to any stage in your life, where would you go?

I wouldn’t necessarily go back to any particular age or time, as I am very happy with where I am right now – but New York two months ago would be amazing!

Best advice you’ve ever gotten?

Keep your chin up and keep going.

What colour describes your style best?

Guilty pleasure?

Sweets! Particularly Candy Kittens.

You’re on a budget and need new clothes, where do you go?

Aside from making my own, H&M.

What’s the most precious things in your wardrobe?

My Sophia Webster heels and Comme des Garçons clutch.

If you had to wear one outfit for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Blue jeans, white t-shirt, oversized pastel jumper and a pair of Converse.

Who are you favourite bloggers/YouTubers that you follow?

How Two Live bloggers.

What are your plans for 2016?

It’s the year of Sewn Right!

Favourite song to listen to when you want to relax and get your work done?

Classical music – it fills the background noise and doesn’t distract me.
