With a client list that spans over 50 brands, a job in the community team at Bloglovin’ and a rapidly growing Instagram presence, it’s hard to believe that Victoria Van Ness is only 19 years old. Having decided that she wanted something else instead of following the conventional path of university after high school, Victoria made the decision to leave her home town of Atlanta, Georgia, to travel the world. Inspired by the cultures she experienced, particularly in terms of fashion, she developed a style sense of her own and created her blog, VictoriaVanness.com. Victoria ended her travels by relocating to New York City, where she has since settled down…for now!
What’s your ideal Friday night out?
I really like going out to see a good show, concert or an event. I like getting ready to go out and just doing something that’s exciting; I’m all about the memories!
If you could only wear one outfit for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Easily a leather jacket, black or white tank top, boyfriend jeans and a pair of sneakers.
What’s the most precious/sentimental thing in your wardrobe?
I have a lot of my grandmother’s jewellery that was given to me. I don’t wear the pieces much because I’m scared something will happen to them, but it’s nice knowing they are there. She has the most fabulous taste; the jewellery is old and classic, and I know I can add it to any outfit I need for a touch of sophistication.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?
My mom always reminds me to stay true to myself. I think it’s so easy for anyone in this industry to constantly feel the need to compare, and I’ve fallen guilty to that a few times. It’s important to remember to stay level-headed and focus on yourself, but wish the best for everyone, and the good will come back to you.
What’s the best piece of advice you have for someone wanting to get into fashion/blogging?
I think that it would be to focus on giving, rather than what you’re going to get out of it. It’s so corny, but I LOVE spending time on Instagram! I’ll comment on other bloggers’ Instagram posts for hours! I develop these friendships with girls around the world. Whether it’s going that extra mile on social media, or working with a small, local designer, it should never be about what they can do for you, but what you can do for them.
What’s your guilty pleasure?
Reality TV and junk food! From Real Housewives to The Bachelorette, I’m all over it.
If you could be successful in another profession, what would it be?
I would love to be a chef! This last year, I’ve really tried to up my game in the kitchen. I think it’d be something I’d really enjoy as a career.
What’s the most surprising thing that people may not know about you?
Growing up, I was a competitive figure skater!
Have you always had an interest in fashion?
I actually haven’t! It was only until I started travelling did I start to gain an interest in fashion from around the world. From there, I kind of developed my own style, based on what I had seen and what I liked.
Describe your style in three words:
Casual, edgy and chic.
Which emoji are you?
Ugh, the little monkey covering his eyes, of course! I feel like we’re meant for each other.
What interests you most about fashion?
The fact that everybody has their own taste. I can see a girl walking down the streets and I’ll be like, “Wow, she looks amazing!” but it won’t be an outfit I’d ever wear. Everybody is so different here in New York, so I get to see a lot of great taste.
Who’s your favourite designer, and if you could have any designer item, what would your dream item be?
Yves Saint Laurent. I’ve had an unhealthy obsession growing. I would love to have a closet stocked of YSL bags and leather jackets.
Would you rather fight 100 duck sized horses, or one horse sized duck?
Probably one horse sized duck…I get overwhelmed when there’s too much going on haha!
Would you rather walk around fashion week in a black bin liner and have everyone think you’re serious, or delete your Instagram?
Hmm…maybe a bin liner could look cool…I’d at least try to own it, because I could never delete my Instagram!
What’s the staple item in your wardrobe right now?
All black sunnies. Can’t do summer without them!
